How to ask for Google reviews without it feeling awkward
Updated November 1, 2026
Ask every customer, in person, at the moment the job is finished, then send a short text with your review link the same day. Make it one tap, ask everyone (not just the happy ones), never offer a reward, and reply to every review you get. That is the whole system, and it fits in a two-line text.
Why it's worth asking every time
Just 4% of consumers say they never read online reviews of local businesses.

Happy customers often don't think to leave a review unless someone asks. Asking everyone, every time, is how a good business starts to look good on Google.
The rules first
Google does not allow businesses to offer incentives such as discounts or free services for reviews, to discourage negative reviews, to ask only happy customers, or to pressure people into reviewing while on site.

What is allowed, and works: asking every customer the same way, politely, and making it one tap.
What to say on the job
Glad you're happy with it. Reviews really help a small business like ours, so if you have a minute later, I'll text you the link. No pressure at all.
The text to send the same day
Hi [Name], thanks for having us out today for the [job]. If you have a minute, a Google review would mean a lot to a small business like ours: [review link]
Hi [Name], one quick reminder in case the link got buried: [review link]. Thanks again for choosing us.
How to reply to reviews
Keep negative replies short and calm, and take the details offline. Future customers read your reply as much as the review.
Thanks so much, [Name]. It was a pleasure working on your [job]. We're here whenever you need us again.
Thank you for the feedback, [Name]. I'm sorry the [job] didn't go the way you expected. I'd like to make it right, please call me at [number] so we can sort it out.

Questions owners ask
When is the best time to ask for a review?
Right when the job is finished and the customer has seen the result, then a text with the link the same day. Later than that, the moment has passed and fewer people follow through.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy does not allow offering incentives such as discounts, free goods or services in exchange for reviews.
Can I only ask happy customers for reviews?
No. Google's policy does not allow selectively asking for positive reviews or discouraging negative ones. Ask everyone the same way.
Should I reply to every Google review?
Yes. Google lists responding to reviews among the things that help your local presence, and people deciding whether to hire you read how you answer, especially the critical ones.
